WELSH WONDER FINISH IGNITES SEASON
Welsh Webber has admitted to not being the best team mate so far this season, but his individual performance at Sedona was as dominating as we are likely to see! After late practice sessions and surprising everyone with his hot laps, Welsh was able to mount his challenge for a top spot and see it through! Darthalainen had spent all week in the paddock, tweaking and begging his AC Cobra to corner better, while Tan Tarquini and Phantom Fangio sneered through the garage door and kept hiding his spanners. The Champ kept his head down for the most part and resisted the temptation to urinate in their fuel tanks while they played in the sand! Tiger Trulli had posted an amazing time while these three wound each other up, seriously damaging to Welsh's prospects but he remembered his dad's birthday with minutes to spare and pulled himself out of the running. This left only The Stig with no tune and Hunter who, despite betting thousands on himself for the win, had only managed minimal improvement since his maiden race. Qualifying was a tense affair then as Darth rolled out his old age AC for the first time in public. Everyone knew he was off the pace, but enough to get a DNF or just not as fast as Darth would be used to? Session two, with Darth first, and eventually qualifying third overall had the funny Phantom gripping his steering wheel a little harder. Welsh was very strong in pole, Tanagrah an impressive second and looking to cause an upset. At race start, Darth dropped to fifth as the pack sped into the first bend. Phantom was third into the bend but first out of it, before Welsh recaptured an original, now taken line! Calls for a restart were not forthcoming and Phantom graciously took a race affecting collision literally on the chin. Welsh didn't exactly benefit, but Tanagrah had snatched the lead and Darth was in second place! All Welsh had to do now was get past Darth... ...9 laps later! Welsh was spitting feathers, Darth's hands were cramping up and Tanagrah was over 3,000 metres ahead! Finally, though, Darth left a gap as his tyres scraped the sand and Welsh jumped through and began his pursuit of Tan. Meanwhile, Phantom was puzzled at his lack of speed and Hunter realised that a lot more work would be needed if he was going to keep betting on himself the way he had. The Stig, whom had been given a 499PI Jaguar XFR to play with, managed to hold Phantom off and actually gain quite an advanatage. Unheard of with untuned Stigs and Human drivers going as well as Phantom had advertised... Welsh was true to his word, however, and he amazingly caught Tan before the halfway point of the race. And as the battle progressed, Welsh and Tan began passing the back markers. Phantom radioed Welsh to request an impolite fly by on The Stig, which Welsh duly obliged with...but this damaged his engine and he would now need to pit! This handed Tan yet another 3,000 metres of advantage and surely his first win of the season. Darth, too, had lapped Hunter and also the disappointed Phantom, accepting third place as a good result in his chosen car. The Stig was so far ahead that fourth was in the bag and only the novice Hunter kept Phantom in fifth. But first and second place remained in the balance as Welsh stormed from the pits and reduced the gap between him and Tan by hundreds of metres per lap. Tan was nervous and met the sand a couple of times while checking his gauges, Welsh determined to catch and pass in his Subaru. The entire field listened to the grunts and groans as Welsh approached the rear of a sweating Tan (!?), almost smelling the fumes being emitted from Tan's Audi S5. At the climax of what sounded like an epic tussle, Welsh had managed to burst through the final chicane and nudge his nose in front by only nineteen thousandths of a second!! The closest finish to a Grand Prix race ever!! After a hold up and a pit stop that cost Welsh a total of nearly 7,000 metres, he took the chequered flag for the first time this season and maximum points too. Tan was very pleased and gentlemanly with his second place, another great result that has helped bunch the Drivers Championship into another unpredictable nitemare for the betting man. New York new circuit beckons our speed demons next week, but Darth Eccleston has mixed high performance with off road fun as he has forced Sport Trucks as the only vehicle type available! Collisions aplenty or courtesy revisited? Simple starts or the first ever 2 second roll off delay? Tune in next week for what is surely going to be a friends list thinning exercise among the drivers of the Thirteen Ghosts Forza Grand Prix. |
